My husband and I have been having the same discussion for a long time now. It is a good reminder and it is encouraging when we see astounding things in the news such as Obama thinking he is above the Presidential Seal by changing it to a FREAKING O!! Who is this guy? Seriously? I’m asking….Anyway, I have decided to share a fraction of our discussion with you.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable, Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
The beginning of this paragraph in the Declaration of Independence is considered by many to be the most important 35 words written in American history. It is important that we remember that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are rights granted to us by our Creator. Though I believe a government is not just when they purposely snatch these rights from a people, the government does not owe us these rights and the duty in protecting them ultimately lies in us, the individual. It is not their responsibility to provide life, liberty, and happiness to its citizens. These rights are individual and sought by individuals. However, if the government does start to impose its arrogant beliefs on its people and make decisions for the masses without the consent of the masses, and these decisions began to steal from one or two classes of people in order to take care of other classes of people, this is unacceptable. The word “fair” is very tricky, isn’t it. We teach our children that Robin Hood is good because it is “fair” to steal from the rich and give to the poor. Assuming that the rich worked hard for their money and were not once themselves looters, how is this “fair” for the rich? Do I believe that if we have more than our neighbor we have a moral responsibility to reach out when they need us? I do, but only after all other resources have been exhausted and only after they have proved that they truly cannot do their duty. And I do believe that many people are not capable of many things due to physical and mental restraints, and even their ideology and yes, they need help. This help, I believe, should come voluntarily from private institutions, churches, and individuals, not from the government tearing our hard work from the grips of our fingers and then dispersing it they see fit. Aren’t the needs of people in Idaho different from those in Florida, Kansas, and New York city? Yet we allow the federal government to pluck our belongings from our back pockets and we seem to sit around and say “oh, well.”
Many people have memorized the first 35 words of the Declaration of Independence but I think it is time we start to memorize the latter half. It OUR right to alter or abolish it. Our right! This can be done one of two ways, we can have another bloody revolution, or, we can take responsibility and vote honestly and with integrity. We should not be satisfied with the nominees for government office if nothing has changed and we shouldn’t give in and vote for one candidate because he/she is lesser of the two evils! We need to start talking to each other, writing our congressmen, and telling people to WAKE UP! We need to quit focusing on the old saying “one person can’t make a difference” and begin looking beyond the one person. Once person may not be able to reach thousands unless you somehow get AV time at a major league baseball game, but one person can start a discussion which can be spread to many people who can make a difference. When the Second Amendment of the constitution is barely upheld in the federal Supreme Court it is time to get worried. It is time to do something about the vision of our founding fathers.
